Digital media house Hivisasa.com has announced its closure thus sending home hundreds of its employees.
Through a statement, founder and CEO, Chloe Spoerry said they reached the hard decision of closing its operations so as “to focus on new opportunities.”
“Hivisasa writers, together with your editors, you succeeded in gaining a large and dedicated audience by publishing quality content.
“In turn, your content generated measurable social change at the local level through collective action
“However, what has not worked after years of focused and sound experimentation is Hivisasa gaining commercial sustainability.
“We never exceeded covering 50% of our operational costs. Therefore, we have made the very hard decision of closing down our current model of local news production, to focus on new opportunities,” read a statement in part.
Hivisasa has been in operation for more than 6 years, with its writers based all over the country.
The move comes when a number of other media houses are crying of poor economic time for media business due to limited adverts.
